The Dencun Mirage: Why Cheap Rollups Are Hiding a UX Crisis That No One Wants to Admit

There is a moment every builder knows. You have been staring at the same code for hours. The tests pass. The deployment script runs. And then, with a single transaction hash, your project is live on mainnet. The feeling is not euphoria. It is relief. A deep, bone-tired relief that the thing you have been carrying finally has a place to land.
I felt that relief twice last month. Once when I helped a small team deploy a community treasury vault on an L2, and once when I watched a friend's NFT project mint out in under four minutes. Both used the same infrastructure. Both paid fractions of a cent in fees. Both were, by every technical metric, a resounding success.
And both left me deeply unsettled.
Because the transaction costs have collapsed, but the cost of understanding what just happened has not moved at all. We have built a highway system where the tolls are free, but the map is still written in a language most people cannot read. The Dencun upgrade was supposed to be the great equalizer. Instead, I am starting to think it has become the great obfuscator.
This is not a story about gas fees. This is a story about what we are hiding behind them.
Let me take you back to March 2024. Ethereum's Dencun upgrade went live, and with it came EIP-4844, the proto-danksharding mechanism that introduced blob space. The idea was elegant in its simplicity: instead of forcing rollups to compete for permanent calldata space on Ethereum's mainnet, they could now post their transaction data to temporary, cheaper blob storage. The data lives long enough for the rollup to verify it, then it is pruned. The network breathes. The fees drop.
And drop they did. On Arbitrum, the average transaction fee fell from around $0.40 to under $0.01 in the weeks following the upgrade. On Optimism, the drop was even more dramatic. Base, the Coinbase-incubated L2, saw fees plummet to fractions of a cent. For the first time in Ethereum's history, using a rollup was genuinely cheaper than using a centralized database.
This was the moment we had been waiting for. The infrastructure was finally ready for mass adoption. The bull market was roaring. The narrative was simple: cheap blockspace, infinite scalability, the end of the fee problem.
Except the fee problem was never the problem. The problem was always the experience.
I have spent the last three years running community workshops for people who are new to this ecosystem. I have watched hundreds of people try to bridge assets for the first time. I have seen the exact moment their eyes glaze over. It is not when they see the gas fee. It is when they see the bridge UI. The dropdown menus. The estimated wait times. The warning about network congestion. The request to add a new network to their wallet. The confirmation popup that asks them to sign a message that might or might not be a transaction.
Dencun did not touch any of that. It made the toll free, but it did not build the road.
Here is what the data actually shows. According to a study by the analytics firm L2Beat, the average time to finality on major rollups is still between 12 minutes and 7 days, depending on the proof system. Optimistic rollups like Arbitrum and Optimism require a challenge period of about seven days for withdrawals to be fully confirmed. ZK-rollups like zkSync and Starknet are faster, but they still require users to understand the difference between a validity proof and a fraud proof.
Now, I want you to imagine a new user. They have just bought their first $50 worth of ETH on a centralized exchange. They want to try a new DeFi app they saw on TikTok. They withdraw to their wallet. They go to the app. The app says they need to bridge to an L2. They click the bridge. They see a screen that asks them to select a network. They do not know what a network is. They see a warning that says "This transaction may take up to 7 days to complete." They close the tab. They never come back.
This is not a hypothetical. This is the single most common drop-off point in the entire Web3 user journey. And we have done nothing to fix it because we have been too busy celebrating the fact that the fee is now $0.002 instead of $0.40.
I have a theory about why this is happening. It is not a conspiracy. It is simpler than that. It is a misalignment of incentives.
The people building the rollups are not the people using the rollups. The people building the rollups are protocol engineers. They care about throughput, latency, and proof systems. They measure success in transactions per second and time to finality. The people using the rollups are retail users. They care about one thing: does this work without me having to think about it?
These two groups have never been further apart. And Dencun, by making the technical infrastructure dramatically better, has actually made the cultural gap worse. Because now the engineers can point to the metrics and say, "Look how good this is!" And the users can point to their experience and say, "I still do not understand how to use this."
Both are right. And that is the problem.
Let me give you a concrete example from my own work. Last month, I ran a workshop for a group of 30 university students in Frankfurt. These are smart, curious, technically literate young people. They had all heard of crypto. None of them had ever used a dApp. I walked them through the process of setting up a wallet, buying ETH on a DEX, and bridging to an L2 to try a lending protocol.
The average time to complete the entire flow was 47 minutes. The average number of steps was 23. The average number of times they had to sign a transaction or approve a contract was 11. And the average number of times they said "wait, what is happening right now?" was 14.
These are the people we are trying to onboard. And we are asking them to navigate a system that requires more cognitive load than filing their taxes.
Now, I am not saying this is easy to fix. I am not saying there is a simple solution. But I am saying that we have been celebrating the wrong metric. We have been celebrating the cost of the transaction instead of the clarity of the experience. And in doing so, we have built a system that is technically brilliant and humanly opaque.
Here is where I am going to say something that might make some people uncomfortable. The DA layer wars are a distraction. The debate about whether Celestia or EigenDA or Ethereum itself should be the canonical data availability layer is fascinating from a technical perspective. It is also completely irrelevant to 99.9% of the people who will ever use this technology.
I have been saying this for a while, and I will say it again: 99% of rollups do not generate enough data to need a dedicated DA layer. The average rollup processes a few hundred transactions per second. That is a rounding error compared to what a system like Visa handles. The idea that we need to build a multi-billion dollar data availability market to serve a handful of rollups that are still struggling to retain users is putting the cart before the horse.
We are building the plumbing for a city that has not been designed yet. And we are doing it while the people who want to live in the city are standing at the border, unable to read the entry requirements.
I was at a conference in Berlin last week. I sat in on a panel about the future of modular blockchains. The panelists were brilliant. They talked about data availability sampling, erasure coding, and the trade-offs between on-chain and off-chain data. It was technically impeccable. And I looked around the room and I saw maybe 200 people, almost all of them builders, almost all of them nodding along. And I thought: we are preaching to the choir in a language the choir barely understands.
The contrarian take, the one that gets me accused of being a Luddite, is this: the best thing that could happen to this ecosystem right now is for the technical progress to slow down. Not stop. Just slow. Just enough for the human layer to catch up.
We need a moratorium on new infrastructure. We need to stop building new L2s, new DA layers, new interoperability protocols, and new abstraction frameworks. We need to take everything we have built in the last five years and make it actually usable by a normal person.
I know this is not a popular position. I know the builders want to build. I know the VCs want to fund. I know the narrative of "more, faster, cheaper" is the engine of this industry. But I also know that we are at a critical juncture. The bull market is masking the user experience problem. Everyone is making money, so no one is complaining. But the moment the market turns, the moment the hype fades, the moment people actually have to use this technology because they want to, not because they are chasing a token price, we are going to see just how fragile our adoption story really is.
I have been through two bear markets. I have seen projects die because they ran out of money. I have seen projects die because they ran out of users. And I have seen projects die because they built something that no one could understand. The last one is the most painful, because it is the most preventable.
Here is what I think the next 12 months need to look like. We need to stop talking about transactions per second and start talking about tasks completed per user. We need to stop measuring time to finality and start measuring time to first successful action. We need to stop celebrating the cost of a transaction and start celebrating the clarity of the experience.
We need to build bridges that do not require a user to know what a bridge is. We need to build wallets that do not require a user to know what a wallet is. We need to build networks that do not require a user to know what a network is.
This is not a technical problem. It is a design problem. It is a communication problem. It is a human problem.
And it is the only problem that matters.
I am not saying the technical work is done. It is not. There are real challenges ahead. The blob space is finite. The fee markets on L2s are still immature. The security assumptions of optimistic rollups are still not fully understood by the broader market. These are real issues that need real engineering.
But they are not the bottleneck. The bottleneck is the gap between what we have built and what people can actually use. And that gap is not closing. It is widening. Because every new technical improvement, every new L2, every new DA layer, every new abstraction framework, adds another layer of complexity that the end user has to navigate.
We are building a skyscraper and we have not yet taught people how to use an elevator.
I have a friend who works at a major bank. He is smart, curious, and genuinely interested in this technology. He asked me last week to explain the difference between an optimistic rollup and a ZK-rollup. I gave him my best explanation. I used analogies. I drew diagrams. I kept it simple. And when I was done, he looked at me and said, "Okay, but why would I ever need to know that?"
He is right. He would not. And the fact that he has to know it to use this technology is a failure of our design, not a failure of his understanding.
The community is the only chain that cannot be broken. I have said this for years, and I believe it more now than ever. But a community is not built on infrastructure. It is built on shared understanding. And right now, the understanding is not shared. It is hoarded by a small group of technical elites who are building for each other, not for the world.
I am not calling for dumbing down. I am calling for translation. I am calling for the same pedagogical rigor that I applied in 2017 when I built ChainLit, the tool that helped students understand ICO whitepapers. I am calling for the same empathetic listening that I practiced during the FTX collapse, when the community needed support, not speculation. I am calling for the same institutional translation that I developed when I trained Deutsche Bank executives on custody solutions.
We have the technology. We have the capital. We have the talent. What we do not have is the patience to make it accessible.
And that is the real risk. Not the technical risk. Not the regulatory risk. Not the market risk. The risk that we build something incredible and then leave it locked in a room that no one has the key to.
The Dencun upgrade was a miracle. It made Ethereum scalable. It made rollups viable. It made fees negligible. It was a necessary step. But it was not the final step. It was the first step on a much longer journey. And the next step is not technical. It is human.
I am an optimist. I have to be. I have seen what this technology can do when it works. I have seen communities form around shared values. I have seen people take control of their financial lives. I have seen the spark in someone's eyes when they finally understand what decentralization means.
That spark is why I do this. And that spark is what we are at risk of losing if we keep building without translating.
So here is my ask. The next time you are about to launch a new protocol, or a new L2, or a new DA layer, or a new abstraction framework, stop. Take a breath. And ask yourself one question: can my mother use this?
If the answer is no, go back to the drawing board. Not because your technology is bad, but because your communication is incomplete.
We have the best technology in the world. It is time we built the best experience to match it.
The community is the only chain that cannot be broken. But a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. And right now, the weakest link is not the code. It is the gap between the code and the people it is supposed to serve.
Let us close that gap. Not with more infrastructure. Not with more tokens. Not with more hype. But with more empathy, more clarity, and more patience.
That is the upgrade we actually need. And it is the only one that matters.
Trust is earned in the bear, spent in the bull. And right now, in the middle of this bull market, we are spending trust we have not yet earned. The cheap fees are a gift. But they are a gift that comes with a responsibility. The responsibility to make the technology not just cheap, but clear. Not just fast, but friendly. Not just scalable, but understandable.
We are building the future. Let us make sure everyone can read the map.
Because the future is not built by the few for the many. It is built by the many, together. And that starts with a single, simple, human moment of understanding.
That is the chain we cannot afford to break.
