The narrative around KuCoin Pay is "cryptocurrency for everyday use." Users hold crypto in their KuCoin account and spend it like cash. However, this narrative hides a fundamental truth: the user is not spending crypto; they are spending KuCoin IOUs. The crypto is held by KuCoin, and the legal title does not transfer to the merchant. The merchant receives local fiat, not stablecoins. The user’s crypto is removed from the on-chain ecosystem entirely.

This is not decentralization. It is a walled garden where the crypto asset is merely a funding source for a traditional fiat transaction. The product does not advance the goal of a permissionless, trust-minimized economy. Instead, it reinforces the existing financial system’s hegemony, with crypto acting as a mere layer of abstraction.

Moreover, the user bears all the risk of a centralized counterparty. KuCoin Pay encourages users to keep funds in their exchange wallet for daily spending, increasing their exposure to exchange risk. Contrarian: The Governance Blind Spot

The article mentions that KuCoin Pay does not have its own token and relies on KCS only as a payment option. This is a missed opportunity for incentive alignment. Without a native governance token, there is no mechanism for users or merchants to influence fee structures, routing rules, or risk parameters. The entire product is dictated by KuCoin’s management. Solutions like stablecoin-native payment protocols (e.g., Circle’s Payment Protocol on Solana) or federated sidechains (e.g., RSK) offer similar functionality without the single-point-of-failure risk.

Based on my experience with the CryptoKitties congestion and the FTX collapse, I have learned that systems that rely on trust in a single entity are temporary. They last until the next crisis. The real question is whether the market will reward this pragmatism or punish the hidden centralization.
