XRP operates on the XRP Ledger (XRPL), a permissioned-like L1 consensus layer that has been running since 2012. Unlike Ethereum or Solana, XRPL does not rely on smart contracts for its primary use case—cross-border payments. Instead, it uses a Federated Consensus mechanism, which is often criticized for its reliance on a set of trusted validators.
